16 year old baseball pitcher

Friday, May 15th, 2009

16 year old pitcher presents on a Sunday with pain that has gotten worse in the Lumbar/Sacral area extending to the hip and gluteal region. At first glance this looked like a herniated disc, but after a careful exam and a myriad of chiropractic and orthopedic tests, it was safely diagnosed with a pelvic sprain strain. Conservative treatment of Chiropractic Manipulation, Heat and Ice, Graston to Trigger Points and Muscle Spasms reduced pain in those areas. A SIJ belt was recommended, and helped signifantly. The SI joint sprain can cripple some people. A few days off from his sports and with a mixture of heat and Ice, he was able to resume regular activities within 10 days. I only recommended that he take a Multi-Vitamin and increase water consumption, and start eating his 5 veggies and 5 fruits per day. I am happy to say that within 4 visits he was back in the game.

He has since presented with ribs out at about T5 level and muscle spasm of the left paraspinals. I was able to reduce his rib and worked out the muscle spasm using heat, Graston Technique and Ice. He was also placed on an Aquamassage bed and iced down for 12 minutes prior to leaving. He has been compliant and a great chiropractic testimony. I hope to help many other athletes. He will be a Senior next year and he just found out he was elected the class president. I am happy to help and give advice to our future leaders. I really think he will benefit from chiropractic treatment in his future athletic career.

Fact #1

““Ladies and Gentlemen, let’s get ready to rumble! In the red corner is the undisputed heavy weight champion of the lipid balancing world, let’s hear it for Designs for Health’s Lipotrienols RYR™.”

Red yeast rice, given to test subjects over an 8 week period, demonstrated a significant impact on modulating blood serum lipids.

Lipotrienols RYR™ is a powerful combination of natural substances intended to support normal blood lipid levels and optimize cardiac and vascular health. The red yeast rice in Lipotrienols RYR™is USDA certified organic and grown in the USA. Designs for Health takes great care to assay our red yeast rice to assure that there are undetectable levels of citrinin (< 1 ppm).

Fact #2

You can’t pick a bone with DHEA.

Taking a DHEA supplement combined with vitamin D and calcium can significantly improve spinal bone density in older women, according to a new study.

“The results of our study are very promising. Similar studies have demonstrated much smaller benefits for bone than we found. However, calcium and vitamin D deficiencies, which are present in half of older adults, may have prevented DHEA from improving bone density in the earlier studies,” said Edward Weiss, Ph.D., associate professor of nutrition and dietetics at Saint Louis University’s Doisy College of Health Sciences and lead author of the study.

Low DHEA concentration has been associated with low bone density, which led researchers to question whether restoring DHEA levels could improve or preserve bone health.

Fact #3

If only those negative alpha-tocopherol studies had told us this!

If only those negative alpha-tocopherol studies had told us this!
It has recently been reported that alpha-tocopherol has not delivered on its initial promise of improving cardiovascular health and reducing cancer risk. It appears one reason may be that supplementation with alpha-tocopherol alone may actually lower serum levels of gamma-tocopherol, which in many recent studies is showing to be the most active form in the tocopherol family and was inversely associated with cardiovascular health and some cancers.

Ultra Gamma Vitamin E delivers increased levels of gamma tocopherol, the most active of the tocopherols and the form of vitamin E associated with expanded health benefits.

Fact #4

A guy walks past a mental hospital and hears a moaning voice ” … 13 … 13 … 13 … “.

The man looks over to the hospital and sees a hole in the wall. He looks through the hole and gets poked in the eye. The moaning voice then groaned ” … 14 … 14 … 14 … “.

Researchers have discovered that a form of vitamin B1 could become a new and effective treatment for one of the world’s leading causes of blindness.

Scientists believe that uveitis, an inflammation of the tissue located just below the outer surface of the eyeball, produces 10 to 15 percent of all cases of blindness in the United States, and causes even higher rates of blindness globally. The inflammation is normally treated with antibiotics or steroid eye drops.

“Benfotiamene strongly suppresses this eye-damaging condition and the biochemical markers we associate with it,” said UTMB associate professor Kota V. Ramana, senior author of the study. “We’re optimistic that this simple supplementation with vitamin B1 has great potential as a new therapy for this widespread eye disease.”

Fact #5

He said, he said.

In more health related news, it has recently been reported that supplements of antioxidant vitamins after exercise may decrease the benefits of the workout by blocking the positive effects of reactive oxygen species. Researchers have reported that antioxidant vitamins C and E may blunt the positive effects of exercise, with respect to insulin sensitivity.

Reacting to the study, Alexander Schauss, PhD, from AIBMR Life Sciences, said, “The primary objective of this study was to study the effect of a 4-week intensive 5-days a week exercise program on insulin sensitivity. Yet the title of the paper leads one to believe otherwise,” he said.

“This is a small gender-biased study of 40 male subjects, 25 to 35 years of age. When I read through the study for the first time I had to wonder how could the authors have come up with such a title for their paper?”, he asked.

Dr. Schauss goes on to say, “Skeletal muscle biopsies were obtained from the right vastus lateralis muscle of study subjects. But some of the data is missing for a number of subjects, and reported as such by the authors,” said Dr Schauss.

The authors noted that biopsies for the ‘early’ time-point were only obtained from five people in the vitamin group, and four in the placebo group. “Yet the authors conclude a “strong induction of PGCl-alpha, PGCl-beta, and PPAR-gamma expression in skeletal muscle following 4 weeks of exercise training in previously untrained, antioxidant naïve individuals” and “markedly reduced exercise-related induction” in those taking antioxidants, based on these limited number of biopsies,” said Dr Schauss.

“Would it not have made more sense to appropriately increase the intensity and duration of exercise slowly and then see if the subject’s bodies didn’t accommodate handling of ROS without a significant change in induction of these markers?” he said.

Common questions about chiropractic.

Monday, May 11th, 2009

1. What is that popping sound I hear when I get an adjustment?

The click or popping sound is gas (nitrogen and oxygen) leaving the joint space into the surrounding tissue.  It may also be a tendon snapping over a bony protuberance.  Both harmless.

2. Why do chiropractors tell you to come back for life?

A feasible answer to this is that chiropractic is about wellness and prevention as well as acute and trauma care.  However, if your spine is in fine shape before an accident or injury, isn’t is a logical explanation your symptoms will resolve quicker.  You go to the dentist twice a year, isn’t your spine more important than your teeth.  It provides locomotion and protects your internal computer and all the wiring.  Wouldn’t you want to know if something was wrong with your spine.  Regular chiropractic treatments and periodic exams can catch injuries and prevent future injuries as well.

3. Do all chiropractors do the same thing?

There are over 300 techniques in chiropractic, as well as a dozen sub-specialties, chiropractors can also utilize nutrition, spinal decompression, exercise, physical therapy as well as perform minor surgery (OR) and even deliver babies (OR).  Personal training, massage therapy, stretching, and a variety of other modalities are often used in practice as well.  Finding a good chiropractor is like finding a good mechanic or good lawyer, once you find a good one, you keep them for life.

4. Is it safe to self-adjust?

It is generally safe if there is no pain with the adjustment.  If you adjust with any little movement, however, this indicates a condition known as hypermobility.  Strengthening and nutritional support is strongly recommended in these cases and you should resist the urge to self-adjust.

5. What are the risks of chiropractic?

If you are a smoker, have a family history of strokes, are severely obese, have a sedentary lifestyle; cervical manipulation may be contraindicated. There are a variety of other red flags, which any good chiropractor should look for before treating the spine.

If you have hardware in your spine, if a segment is fused, if you have cancer of the bone, or softening of the bone - severe osteoporosis, deep manipulation may be contra-indicated.  A low force mechanical adjuster called an Activator is completely safe in these cases.

Chiropractor should alter his or her technique to include using an activator, or drop table, or Active Release Techniques.  Trigger point therapy and NIMMO are also helpful in relieving pain in certain areas.  Look for a chiropractor that utilizes a variety of soft tissue techniques when treating you.  You may have to try your chiropractor out for a few visits and by all means tell him if this is not working out - it is so frustrating having patients drop out of care without any feedback.

6. Is there a type of patient where adjustments are contra-indicated?

Patients with blood clotting problems, on certain medications, and certain cancers should be carefully examined before manipulation is performed. The adjustment should be explained, and the patient should be educated as well as prepared for any forceful manipulation.  I hate hearing stories of chiropractors that perform manipulation by surprise.  The patient rarely continues care and will often drop out and never return if this happens.

Cures for cancer already exist!

Conventional medicine remains clueless on cancer

So to say that there is a cure for cancer isn’t even a stretch. In fact, the bewildering belief is the one held by conventional medicine, which insists that there is no cure for cancer. That is absolutely stunning in its ignorance, because every person alive has already cured cancer. And the body is preprogrammed with the ability to cure cancer on its own. (Drug companies, of course, don’t want you to realize this. If people figure out they can already cure cancer, then anti-cancer drug sales might plummet!)

It is astonishing that conventional medicine fails to recognize the true nature of cancer. To say that there’s no cure for cancer is to deny the healing potential of the human body. It is, in a sense, to deny one’s very own human nature.

It’s not surprising to hear this, though, since conventional medicine is often about separation from nature, or even separation from self. If you think about the way conventional medicine looks at the body, it’s all about separation and isolation. We see doctors dealing with body parts: we have foot doctors and eye doctors and ear doctors, but we have very few holistic doctors who look at the whole person — the body, the mind and the spirit — and then prescribe a healing strategy that takes into account that holistic existence.

At one level, though, I agree with the defenders of conventional medicine, because when they say that there is no cure for cancer, what they mean is that there is no “cure” if you continue to look at human beings as an accumulation of isolated parts. You can’t cure cancer if you keep peering through your microscopes trying to understand the subtle biochemistry of angiogenesis and tumorigenesis. That’s why the whole “cure for cancer” fundraising system in this country is a sham. What they’re seeking is more research dollars to become even better-funded technicians who attempt to tear apart the secrets of biochemistry… but yet who have no knack for seeing the big picture.

The scope of so-called “cancer research” as practiced today is far too narrow to have the necessary understanding to even believe in a cure for cancer. Thus, from their point of view, they are indeed correct: there is no cure for cancer if you view the body as a collection of parts. Similarly, some doctors think human behavior is fully accounted for by nothing more than varying levels of neurotransmitters. And get this — some artificial intelligence geeks think human beings are nothing more than complex computers (Turing machines).

In contrast to all this, if you believe that the universe is holistic in nature; if you believe that a human being is more than the sum of body parts — that we’re more than Frankenstein monsters who happen to stumble into doctors’ offices with various complaints, then it is not difficult at all to understand that the cure for cancer is within each and every one of us. And in fact, it’s built right into our DNA. The very blueprint of life on which our biological systems are based is, in fact, imprinted with the cure for cancer. In a very real way, we are preprogrammed to be cancer-free.

 Beyond the biochemistry

We are healing machines. The human body is a miracle of nanotechnology that far exceeds the advances of modern science. And even if you were to understand all the physical structures and chemical interactions of the immune system, I still don’t think you would grasp its complexities, because there are many interactions in the immune system that are energetic in nature. That’s why cancer researchers can run lab tests for a hundred years and burn through a billion dollars in funding and still not uncover the mythical “cure for cancer.”

Trying to find a chemical cure for cancer is sort of like asking some poor sop to find the pot of gold at the end of a rainbow. If he thinks the rainbow is physical (and not made of light energy), then he’s going to chase that rainbow endlessly. Sure, the rainbow looks real, but it’s actually a projection of vibrational energy.

A holistic view of health is much like recognizing the true nature of a rainbow — the interaction between sunlight and small particles of water, and the varying angles of refraction that split full-spectrum light into strands of visible colors.

But organized medicine (pharmaceutical companies, medical doctors, the FDA, and other similar players) still think there’s a pot of gold at the end of that research rainbow. They think they can understand the rainbow by building bigger and better tools of observation to measure rainbow properties at a microscopic level. And in time, they will create all sorts of new technical terms to describe all the rainbow observations they have made, and they will justify huge budgets to continue the rainbow research, and yet all along, they’ll still miss the fact that the entire rainbow isn’t physical at all.

Human beings are living, breathing vibrational energy

In humans, the big picture is that we, too, are vibrating energy. In fact, you could argue that every chemical interaction is energetic at the molecular level. From a physics point of view, there are no atoms, there are no electrons, we are all just vibrating energy and no physicist worth his salt would deny that.

It is in fact this subtle energy that I believe will be the primary focus of the future of medicine. It’s called vibrational medicine, and it encompasses not just the energetic nature of matter itself, but also homeopathy and the energies exhibited by water as well as acupuncture, sound therapy, phototherapy, non-local healing and many other energy-based therapeutic modalities with proven healing benefits.

In the holistic medicine world, curing cancer is an everyday event. Not because we’re better technicians than those in organized medicine (we aren’t), but because we operate at a deeper level of understanding about the nature of disease, the nature of human beings, and the “big picture” of healing.

If you have cancer and you want a highly technical explanation of the biochemistry of your disease, visit an M.D. or an oncologist. If you want to actually be healed, on the other hand, visit a naturopath.

Don’t let organized medicine send you on a fool’s errand chasing rainbows. Cancer is not a pharmacological problem. It cannot be solved by applying more synthetic chemistry (prescription drugs) to the body. And it most certainly cannot be solved by poisoning the body (chemotherapy).

What is Cancer?

Saturday, May 9th, 2009

Cancer is a term used for diseases in which abnormal cells divide without control and are able to invade other tissues. Cancer cells can spread to other parts of the body through the blood and lymph systems.

Cancer is not just one disease but many diseases. There are more than 100 different types of cancer. Most cancers are named for the organ or type of cell in which they start - for example, cancer that begins in the colon is called colon cancer; cancer that begins in basal cells of the skin is called basal cell carcinoma.

Cancer types can be grouped into broader categories. The main categories of cancer include:

  • Carcinoma - cancer that begins in the skin or in tissues that line or cover internal organs.
  • Sarcoma - cancer that begins in bone, cartilage, fat, muscle, blood vessels, or other connective or supportive tissue.
  • Leukemia - cancer that starts in blood-forming tissue such as the bone marrow and causes large numbers of abnormal blood cells to be produced and enter the blood.
  • Lymphoma and myeloma - cancers that begin in the cells of the immune system.
  • Central nervous system cancers - cancers that begin in the tissues of the brain and spinal cord.

(For definitions of other cancer-related terms, see NCI’s Dictionary of Cancer Terms.)

Origins of Cancer

All cancers begin in cells, the body’s basic unit of life. To understand cancer, it’s helpful to know what happens when normal cells become cancer cells.

The body is made up of many types of cells. These cells grow and divide in a controlled way to produce more cells as they are needed to keep the body healthy. When cells become old or damaged, they die and are replaced with new cells.

However, sometimes this orderly process goes wrong. The genetic material (DNA) of a cell can become damaged or changed, producing mutations that affect normal cell growth and division. When this happens, cells do not die when they should and new cells form when the body does not need them. The extra cells may form a mass of tissue called a tumor.

(Image from Understanding Cancer Series: Cancer.)

Not all tumors are cancerous; tumors can be benign or malignant.

  • Benign tumors aren’t cancerous. They can often be removed, and, in most cases, they do not come back. Cells in benign tumors do not spread to other parts of the body.
  • Malignant tumors are cancerous. Cells in these tumors can invade nearby tissues and spread to other parts of the body. The spread of cancer from one part of the body to another is called metastasis.

Some cancers do not form tumors. For example, leukemia is a cancer of the bone marrow and blood.

Cancer Statistics

A new report from the nation’s leading cancer organizations shows that, for the first time since the report was first issued in 1998, both incidence and death rates for all cancers combined are decreasing for both men and women, driven largely by declines in some of the most common types of cancer. (Read more about the Annual Report.)

Five To Stay Alive

It’s the rare child who actually wants to eat fruits and vegetables. Kids are bombarded by television and radio ads for cereals, candy, and chips that contain huge amounts of sugar and salt, especially large quantities of saturated fat. The sugar craving begins in childhood - kids quickly develop a taste for sweets. To a child’s sugar-sensitized palette, the complex sugars contained in fruits and vegetables are a poor substitute.

We carry these habits into adulthood and our long-term health suffers as a result. Twenty-four hours is not enough time in the day for most of us, and many consistently choose fast foods as a means of satisfying our need for food and a method for limiting the amount of precious time we spend on meal preparation.

But fast food is really not food in the sense that the nutrition they provide is minimal. Fast foods are essentially empty calories. Many times it is deep fried, heated and re-heated, thus containing no active enzymes.  Fast food is a business, they are in it to make money - buy low, sell high.  The lowest bidder gets the contract.  You are eating the bottom of the barrel when choosing fast food.

In the 1950s and 1960s a well-known health-related slogan was “an apple a day keeps the doctor away”. This advice represented ancient folk wisdom. Today, decades of research has shown that all fruits and vegetables  have remarkable health-promoting and disease-fighting properties.

Most fruits and vegetables are packed with magical biochemicals called phytochemicals - “phyto” means plant. Phytochemicals give fruits and vegetables their color, so the more colorful a food, the more phytochemicals it contains.

Ongoing research studies show that phytochemicals - of which there are thousands of varieties - provide protection against the development of many chronic diseases, including cancer, heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, diabetes, and arthritis.1,2

Many phytochemicals are antioxidants and neutralize free radicals in human cells. Others have anti-inflammatory properties - these help slow the aging process.

Fruits and vegetables are so important for our health and well-being that many national organizations have promoted the “five to stay alive rule” - the recommendation is to eat at least five portions of fruits and vegetables each day.3

Portions could include any of these - an apple, an orange, a banana, a cup of grapes, a cup of blueberries, a yam, a couple of carrots, a couple of tomatoes, and a couple of tablespoons of broccoli.

For many of us, “five to stay alive” would be a radical departure from our old habits. It might take a little effort to develop new shopping and eating habits, but once you’re in the groove it’s likely you’ll be feeling so much better you’ll wonder why you didn’t start this healthy-eating plan sooner.

Your chiropractor is an expert on nutritional health and will be glad to help you create a food plan that works for you and your family. If fruits and vegetables are so good for you, why not just go all the way and become a vegetarian? This is a choice many people make, and it’s certainly a valid option.

Regardless, it’s necessary for all of us to ensure our diet contains “complete protein”.  The proteins that make up most of our body’s structures are themselves composed of amino acids - there are approximately 20 known varieties. Of these, eight amino acids are described as “essential” - we need to obtain these essential amino acids via the food we eat.

Essential amino acids are found in turkey, chicken, fish, meat, milk, cheese, and eggs. Vegetarians who do not eat any of these foods must be sure to obtain their daily requirement of essential amino acids.

How much protein should a person eat each day? For good metabolic efficiency, i.e., for fit people who exercise regularly, an approximate measurement is one gram of protein for each pound of body weight.

Fact #1

Gamma tocopherol may be the belle of the vitamin E ball.

A gamma tocopherol rich mixture of mixed tocopherols inhibited colon cancer in mice. The inhibition may be due to the apoptosis-inducing, anti-inflammatory, antioxidative, and reactive nitrogen species-trapping activities of tocopherols.

Our new Ultra Gamma Vitamin E is optimally formulated to provide expanded health benefits with increased levels of gamma tocopherol and still provides the antioxidant benefits of alpha tocopherol.

Fact #2

And yet another vitamin takes on colon cancer.

Increased intake of vitamin B6 from dietary and supplements may reduce the risk of colorectal cancer by over 50 per cent, suggests a new study.

Researchers report that PLP levels were positively correlated with blood levels of folate and vitamin B12. PLP levels were also slightly inversely correlated blood levels of homocysteine, and the inflammatory markers C-reactive protein (CRP), tumor necrosis factor-alpha receptor 2, and interleukin-6 (IL-6).

Regarding the incidence of colorectal cancer, plasma PLP levels were inversely linked with risk of colorectal cancer, said the researchers. Indeed, when increasing levels were found to decrease the risk by 8, 58, and 51 per cent, they said.

Fact #3

Maybe my colon simply needs a nap.

Serotonin is best known as a chemical in the brain that plays an important role as a neurotransmitter in the modulation of anger, aggression, body temperature, mood, sleep, human sexuality, appetite, and metabolism. Did you know though, that approximately 95% of serotonin is located in the cells of the gut wall, where it regulates contraction, the movement of the bowel, and the secretion of fluid in the bowel?

One theory as to why some people have IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) may have to do with this neurotransmitter. When there’s an abnormal amount of serotonin in the gut, or if there’s an abnormality in the function of serotonin, it can lead to abdominal pain, cramping, and changes in bowel habits, especially loose stools.

GI Revive™ provides therapeutic levels of L-glutamine, N-acetyl-glucosamine, MSM, DGL, slippery elm, marshmallow, chamomile, okra, TOA-free cat’s claw, quercitin, and mucin for comprehensive support of optimal gastrointestinal health. Prunus and citrus pectin are included to aid regularity.

Fact #4

When your eyes are too big for your stomach, remember this.

When your eyes are too big for your stomach, remember this. A diet that includes key nutrients and low-glycemic index foods is likely to reduce risks for age-related macular degeneration (AMD), according to the results of a new study.

The new research found that participants whose diets included higher levels of protective nutrients and of low-GI foods were at lowest risk for early and advanced AMD.

A large body of science supports the role of lutein and other eye health ingredients such as zeaxanthin, vitamins C and E, and zinc, against the development of AMD.

Fact #5

Besides bringing your sunscreen and beach ball to the beach, bring your selenium as well.

Higher blood levels of selenium may reduce the incidence of skin cancer by about 60 per cent, according to a new study.

The researchers report that the mineral was associated with reduced risks of both basal cell carcinoma (BCC) and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC).

The highest average selenium levels of between 1.3 and 2.8 micromoles per litre were associated with a 57 per cent reduction in the incidence of BCC, and a 64 per cent reduction in the incidence of SCC, compared to the lowest average selenium levels of between 0.4 and 1.0 micromoles per litre.

“Relatively high serum selenium concentrations are associated with an approximately 60 per cent decrease in subsequent tumour incidence of both BCC and SCC,” wrote the researchers, “where as serum concentrations of carotenoids or alpha-tocopherol are not associated with later skin cancer incidence.”

Fact #1
The Europeans are so progressive.

Belgium has recently approved the use of CoQ10 in food supplements at levels of 200mgs.

As the Belgium’s Superior Health Council is well-respected across the 27-member European Union, other Union countries may follow Belgium’s lead.

DFH’s Q-Avail Nano™ supplies 200mgs of CoQ10 per softgel (available in our clinic)

Fact #2
Magnificent Magnesium.

Low blood levels of magnesium may increase the risk of stroke by 25 per cent, while increasing levels of the mineral could decrease the risk of ischemic stroke, with the effects related to magnesium’s benefits on blood pressure and for diabetics, according to a recent study.

According to some observational studies, a connection has been made between intake of sodium and hypertension. Conversely, more magnesium, potassium and calcium has been inversely linked to hypertension in some observational studies.

DFH offers three forms of magnesium, Magnesium Malate Chelate and Magnesium Glycinate using Albion Laboratories True Amino Acid Chelates. We also offer Magnesium Ascorbate, a buffered form of Vitamin C.

Fact #3
You’ve never seen Bugs Bunny having to deal with abdominal obesity, did you?

Increased intakes of antioxidant carotenoids, and particularly lycopene, may reduce the risk of developing metabolic syndrome by about 50 per cent, says a new study.

Scientists report that middle-aged and elderly men with highest average intake of all carotenoids had a 58 per cent lower incidence of metabolic syndrome, while the highest intake of lycopene was associated with a 45 per cent lower incidence, compared to men with the lowest average intakes.

Ultimate Antiox Full Spectrum is our new powerhouse antioxidant formula that combines some of nature’s most potent herbs and spices, along with other well-researched antioxidant compounds – including a full spectrum of the vitamin E family and a broad range of carotenoids, including lycopene.

Fact #4
I’m inflamed with my love of vitamin D.

A researcher has found that vitamin D deficiency is associated with inflammation, a negative response of the immune system, in healthy women.

Increased concentrations of serum TNF-α, an inflammatory marker, were found in women who had insufficient vitamin D levels. This study is the first to find an inverse relationship between vitamin D levels and concentrations of TNF-α in a healthy, non-diseased population. This may explain the vitamin’s role in the prevention and treatment of inflammatory diseases, including heart disease, multiple sclerosis and rheumatoid arthritis.

Vitamin D Supreme provides 5,000 IU of vitamin D3 per veggie cap, and vitamin K in both K1 and the MK-7 form of K2, which is highly bioavailable. Vitamin D Synergy, our 2000 IU lower dose product, should be considered for maintaining optimal blood levels of vitamin D for people that are exposed to adequate sunlight.

Fact #5
Ummm…now, what was I saying again about vitamin D?

Oral vitamin D supplements at a dose of at least 400 international units per day are associated with a reduced risk of bone fractures in older adults, according to results of a meta-analysis.

“The anti-fracture benefits of vitamin D have been questioned by several recent trials, leading to uncertainty among patients and physicians regarding recommendations for vitamin D supplementation,” the authors write as background information in the article. “Factors that may obscure a benefit of vitamin D are low adherence to treatment, low dose of vitamin D or the use of less potent ergocalciferol (vitamin D2).”
