Friday’s Fun Nutrition Facts

Fact #1
The Europeans are so progressive.

Belgium has recently approved the use of CoQ10 in food supplements at levels of 200mgs.

As the Belgium’s Superior Health Council is well-respected across the 27-member European Union, other Union countries may follow Belgium’s lead.

DFH’s Q-Avail Nano™ supplies 200mgs of CoQ10 per softgel (available in our clinic)

Fact #2
Magnificent Magnesium.

Low blood levels of magnesium may increase the risk of stroke by 25 per cent, while increasing levels of the mineral could decrease the risk of ischemic stroke, with the effects related to magnesium’s benefits on blood pressure and for diabetics, according to a recent study.

According to some observational studies, a connection has been made between intake of sodium and hypertension. Conversely, more magnesium, potassium and calcium has been inversely linked to hypertension in some observational studies.

DFH offers three forms of magnesium, Magnesium Malate Chelate and Magnesium Glycinate using Albion Laboratories True Amino Acid Chelates. We also offer Magnesium Ascorbate, a buffered form of Vitamin C.

Fact #3
You’ve never seen Bugs Bunny having to deal with abdominal obesity, did you?

Increased intakes of antioxidant carotenoids, and particularly lycopene, may reduce the risk of developing metabolic syndrome by about 50 per cent, says a new study.

Scientists report that middle-aged and elderly men with highest average intake of all carotenoids had a 58 per cent lower incidence of metabolic syndrome, while the highest intake of lycopene was associated with a 45 per cent lower incidence, compared to men with the lowest average intakes.

Ultimate Antiox Full Spectrum is our new powerhouse antioxidant formula that combines some of nature’s most potent herbs and spices, along with other well-researched antioxidant compounds – including a full spectrum of the vitamin E family and a broad range of carotenoids, including lycopene.

Fact #4
I’m inflamed with my love of vitamin D.

A researcher has found that vitamin D deficiency is associated with inflammation, a negative response of the immune system, in healthy women.

Increased concentrations of serum TNF-α, an inflammatory marker, were found in women who had insufficient vitamin D levels. This study is the first to find an inverse relationship between vitamin D levels and concentrations of TNF-α in a healthy, non-diseased population. This may explain the vitamin’s role in the prevention and treatment of inflammatory diseases, including heart disease, multiple sclerosis and rheumatoid arthritis.

Vitamin D Supreme provides 5,000 IU of vitamin D3 per veggie cap, and vitamin K in both K1 and the MK-7 form of K2, which is highly bioavailable. Vitamin D Synergy, our 2000 IU lower dose product, should be considered for maintaining optimal blood levels of vitamin D for people that are exposed to adequate sunlight.

Fact #5
Ummm…now, what was I saying again about vitamin D?

Oral vitamin D supplements at a dose of at least 400 international units per day are associated with a reduced risk of bone fractures in older adults, according to results of a meta-analysis.

“The anti-fracture benefits of vitamin D have been questioned by several recent trials, leading to uncertainty among patients and physicians regarding recommendations for vitamin D supplementation,” the authors write as background information in the article. “Factors that may obscure a benefit of vitamin D are low adherence to treatment, low dose of vitamin D or the use of less potent ergocalciferol (vitamin D2).”
